It’s downright scary to think of ALL the Halloween parties that are happening now. Plus, it’s always a challenge to find a costume that is outrageous, hysterical or even brilliant. This is made even more difficult when you are going to these parties with a date or your BFF, because you really need to coordinate the two costumes. Am I right, or am I right?
The vistas in Palo Duro canyon are nothing short of stunning. This is due to the almost ethereal light which illuminates this natural treasure. World famous painter, Georgia O’Keeffe, who lived in the Amarillo and Canyon areas of the Texas Panhandle in the early 20th century wrote of the canyon, “It is a burning, seething cauldron, filled with dramatic light and color.”
While native Americans had inhabited the canyon for centuries, the Spanish explorers who came much later first called the area “Palo Duro,” which translates to “hard wood.” The canyon was formed by erosion from the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River as the water moved sediment downstream. Over time, the wind and water gradually widened the canyon. It is now the second largest canyon in the United States, following the Grand Canyon.
Students who are in their first year of college have to deal with stress that they likely have never experienced before – from homesickness to anxiety over challenging studies. This stress can lead to weight gain in many first-year students, which is often called the “Freshman 15.” Anyone who has ever experienced this condition knows it’s more than just an old-timey expression. It’s real.
According to Teens Health, “College offers many temptations. You’re on your own and free to eat what you want, when you want it. You can pile on the portions in the dining hall, eat dinners of french fries and ice cream and indulge in sugary and salty snacks to fuel late-night study sessions. In addition, you may not get as much exercise as you did in high school.
“College is also a time of change, and the stress of acclimating to school can trigger overeating. People sometimes eat in response to anxiety, homesickness, sadness or stress, and all of these can be part of adapting to being away at school.”
Nowhere is the rich history of the United States Air Force more on display than at Dyess Air Force Base (AFB) in Abilene and Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, Texas. The men and women who are stationed at these two bases represent the best that America has to offer.
Finally. Our long, national nightmare is over. It seemed like the spring and summer would never end. But, thankfully, the planets are aligned again.
Please join me in standing, taking a big, deep breath and then saying the words that we have all been longing to say since last February:
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL???
The men and women who serve our country in the United States Air Force have something else to be proud of – the anniversary of this military branch’s formation is September 18! Over the past 71 years, Texas bases such as Dyess located in Abilene, and Shepard in Wichita Falls have prepared highly trained personnel to defend our country in air spaces around the globe.
Your friends at MenuRunners gratefully say, “Happy Birthday U.S. Air Force!”
